Welcome to Leading the Way: Stories of Inspiring Women in Leadership

Hello and welcome to Leading the Way! My name is Kiyara Wade, and I’m a senior at The University of Akron, where I study Strategic and Organizational Communication with a minor in Marketing and certificates in Social Media and Women’s Studies. This blog is a reflection of my passion for uplifting and empowering women, particularly in the professional world. As the Vice President of Member Relations Media for the Women in Business organization, I have had the privilege of working closely with women leaders who are not only breaking barriers but also creating opportunities for future generations. Through this blog, I hope to share their stories and provide insights into what it takes to succeed in a world that often challenges women’s ambition.

Leading the Way is dedicated to highlighting the achievements of women in leadership, many of whom are under-recognized despite their substantial contributions. We’ll dive into their unique journeys—how they overcame obstacles, built their careers, and are paving the path for others. Whether these women are leading in boardrooms, academia, or grassroots movements, they each offer invaluable lessons in resilience, innovation, and the importance of mentorship. I want to showcase how women are changing industries, breaking stereotypes, and advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society.

This topic resonates with me on a personal level. Throughout my time at The University of Akron, I’ve taken on various leadership roles that have given me firsthand experience with the challenges women face when stepping into positions of power. My work with the Women in Business organization has been especially eye-opening. We often host events featuring successful female professionals who share their experiences with our members, and these moments have inspired me to keep pushing the boundaries of what women can achieve in the workplace.

For example, I was working on a project with Sherwin Williams' Katy Spangler, an accomplished leader in business analytics. Katy’s role in fostering a culture of data professionals and her involvement with Sherwin Williams Women’s Club makes her the kind of role model this blog will focus on. Her journey, like so many others, is a reminder of the impact women can have when they are given the space and support to lead.

My goal with Leading the Way is to not only celebrate the accomplishments of women leaders but also to spark conversations about the systemic barriers that still exist. This blog is for anyone who believes in the power of women’s leadership and wants to be part of a movement that encourages equality and empowerment in all sectors.
